All government schools in Victoria have a School Council, which is a legally formed body that is given powers to set the key directions of a school within guidelines provided by the state government Department of Education and Training (DET).
The main role of the School Council is to develop the school’s strategic plan, approve the annual budget and set and review school policies. The School Council has a number of other roles and responsibilities they carry out during the course of the year including membership of sub-committees. The current sub-committees include Education, Finance, Building and Grounds and Fundraising.
Hartwell's School Council members include the School Principal, a teacher representative and a group of parents. One of the parents is elected the President. A position on School Council is usually held for a two-year term, with elections held in the first term of each school year.
Throughout the year, the School Council meets at least twice per term.
